Hyderabad: Forestry Innovation Investment (FII), also known as Canadian Wood, a crown agency of the Government of British Columbia with a mandate to promote its forest products in international markets, held a seminar on 'Build with Wood,' at BTR Greens in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The meet was held jointly with Hyderabad-based property developer Mak Projects.
Mak Projects has partnered with Canadian wood to build and promote sustainable wooden luxury homes in India. The volume of wood used in Mak Wood Villa is 192 cubic metres, the developer stated. "This method of construction can reduce carbon emissions in construction. About 327 metric tonnes of CO2 emission has been shunned by using wood for the construction of these houses."
The Canadian Wood Villa was constructed in less than 10 months. 70 artisans were trained with skills of building with wood. Stanley Berlin, Wood Construction Specialist said, "This seminar is an opportunity to introduce wood frame construction technique to Indian architects, designers, builders and manufacturers. The materials used to build the villa, is renewable, unlike concrete and steel, which are exhaustible resources. For every tree harvested, Canadian Wood Products plants three more trees."
Providing statistical insights, Bhawna Sharma from Artius Interior Products said, "Statistics show that one cubic metre of timber stores around one tonne of carbon. The world is facing two major issues at the moment, housing and the global climate crisis. If we continue to build using traditional materials like concrete, we will only accelerate global warming. The Canadian Wood Villa will serve as an example for promoting wood construction in India."
